The Immunology, Inflammation, Infectiology, and Microbiology institute (I3M) brings microbiology and infectious diseases together with immunology and inflammation. It aims to create a continuum across these research fields, and to develop a coherent strategy for tackling issues that are of almost daily concern in society, including the emergence and re-emergence of pathogens, chronic infections, neglected infectious diseases, transmission, treatment resistance, immunodeficiencies, inflammatory diseases, allergy, auto-immune disease, and transplantation. Meeting these challenges requires new developments in vaccinology, biological therapy, and in cell and gene therapy.

Each of Inserm’s theme-based institutes is led by a director, who is appointed by the Inserm CEO, and supported by experts who span the scientific fields concerned. The key goals of these institutes are:

  • to take stock of the current state of affairs in their research field, and promote French biomedical research within it
  • to lead the scientific community, coordinate its expansion, and put forward major objectives
  • to ensure high-level support for fundamental, translational, and clinical research in each field
  • to support the creation of public-private partnerships and value-creation in research
